Should your small business website have a blog?

A blog gets recommended to every small business as an SEO win, which is true, but only for the ones who keep it up. An abandoned blog with three posts from two years ago does you no favours. Here's how to know if it's worth starting.

Why it works

Every blog post is a new page Google can find you through, answering a question your customers are actually searching for. Over time, that adds up to more ways into your site than your homepage and service pages alone can offer. It's a slow build, not a quick win, but it compounds.

How publishing works

On Growth and Premium, the blog comes with the CMS, so you write and publish posts yourself whenever you like. On Starter, a blog can be added without the CMS: you send me the article and I publish it for you at the standard content-update rate. If you want to publish it yourself on Starter, add the CMS too.

What it costs

The blog itself is £200 as a Starter add-on, and included on Growth and Premium. The real cost isn't the build, it's the time to actually write for it, or the cost of having someone write for you: copywriting is billed at £95 an hour if that's not something you want to do yourself.

The honest question

Before adding one, ask whether you'll actually write something roughly monthly. A blog with one post a year barely helps your SEO and reads as neglected to anyone who finds it. If you can commit to writing regularly, or you're happy to pay for someone to write it, it's genuinely one of the better investments in your site. If not, put the budget into getting the core pages right instead.
