Do you need online booking on your website?
If people book time with you, a form that just says "get in touch" is asking for a game of email tag nobody enjoys. Online booking closes that loop, but it isn't free and it isn't always necessary. Here's how it actually works and when it earns its place.
What it actually is
Booking on your website almost always means connecting a scheduling tool, Cal.com is the one I use, rather than building a calendar from scratch. Visitors see your real availability and book a slot, you get notified, and the booking is recorded so it doesn't just live inside the calendar tool.
When it's worth adding
- You take appointments: consultations, fittings, treatments, calls.
- You currently lose time to back-and-forth emails or missed calls just finding a slot.
- Your availability changes often enough that a static "call us" page underserves people.
- You want a booking to show up as a lead in your own project or CRM record, not just an entry in a calendar app.
When you can skip it
If you take one or two bookings a week and answering the phone is no trouble, a booking integration is solving a problem you don't have. A clear phone number and a contact form cost nothing extra and work fine at low volume.
What's involved
You'll need your own account with the booking provider, so you can manage your calendar and get notified yourself. Cal.com's free plan covers a single person's scheduling, and its paid tier adds things like round robin scheduling across staff and automated reminder emails, if you eventually need them. On my side it's built into the Growth and Premium packages, and it's a £350 add-on on Starter.
Because it's a live integration that can break, sites with booking need to sit on at least the Standard maintenance plan rather than Essential.
