Website builder vs hiring a web designer: which is right for you?

Wix and Squarespace are genuinely good tools, and for some businesses they are the right answer. For others they become a slow drain on time and a ceiling on growth. Here is how to tell which camp you are in, without the sales pitch.

When a builder makes sense

  • You are testing an idea and want something online this week.
  • Your needs are simple: a few pages, a contact form, not much more.
  • You genuinely enjoy the fiddling, and your time has little opportunity cost right now.
  • Budget is the single hardest constraint.

Where builders quietly cost you

The monthly fee is the obvious cost. The real one is your time and the result. Template sites tend to look like everyone else's, the SEO and speed have a low ceiling, and the hours you spend wrestling with layouts are hours not spent running your business.

If your website is meant to bring in work, looking the same as your competitors is a real disadvantage, not a cosmetic one.

What hiring a designer gives you

A designer turns your business into a site that actually reflects it: a custom design, the technical side handled, proper on-page SEO, and a fast, mobile-first build. Working with a freelancer in particular means you deal with the person doing the work, and you get your time back.

The trade-off is cost. A freelancer typically runs £800 to £3,000 for a small business site, against a builder's few hundred a year. For most businesses where the website needs to win customers, that pays for itself quickly.

The honest middle ground

Plenty of businesses start on a builder and move to a designed site once it matters. There is no shame in that. If you are at the point where the website needs to pull its weight, that is usually the moment to hire someone.
